ERIC'S TRIP * THE IMBREDS * SISSY THE SHOW PLACE THEATER, BUFFALO,NY JULY 5/95 A buffalo band called Sissy opened this show, Eric's Trip's tour, with a very Nivana-derived set. The singer looked like Brandon Lee in drag, and the drummer was very solid. The Inbreds were up next, and were impressive. the two-piece (bass and drums) put out a very full sound throgh their pop-ish set. Eric's Trip took the stage sometime after midnight, and it took only seconds for the walls of sound to grow. The band were cranking their unique brand of full-on, full-out pop punk from Moncton (or as they say, Punkton), New Brunswick. The set was all-out high gear from the get-go with Julie, Rick and Chris sharing vocal duties, mixed with rough and sweet guitar feeback and effects. Drummer Mark was amzingly quick, driving and dynamic - even more so than i expected from listening intently to their incredible lo-fi and personal records. The set even ventured into the occasional tender moment as a song would down or wove into another. Eric's Trip seem to have three very different identities that were clarified this night: first, the high power plugged-pop live show; the gentle, spacey and touching acoustic performance, and third, the four-and eight-track recording masters which capture both of these very different, yet equally powerful, elements. It was a magical evening. Seeing such a great band in a tiny club with a small number of people created an intimacy which made a great show even more memorable. written by: Dan Ball From EXCLAIM magazine August 1995 |
